The Challenge
A tight urban plot with neighbours on three sides required careful planning to maximise natural light and give each room a sense of individual identity — without the building reading as a stack of boxes from the street.
Our Approach
The building mass was stepped back at upper levels to create planting terraces, each drawing daylight into the rooms below. The palette was deliberately robust — exposed brick, zinc cladding and timber soffit — materials that would hold their own against the surrounding urban grain and improve with age. Internal volumes were varied: double-height living space contrasted with intimate, lower-ceilinged bedrooms.
The Outcome
A family home that feels like a small village within a single boundary — four distinct outdoor spaces, three bedrooms, a working studio and a roof garden, all within 1,800 sq ft. Three years on, the brick has developed a character the clients describe as exactly what they hoped for.
